Show steps
- From 09:00 to 17:00 is 8:00 (480 min).
- Subtract the 30 min break: 480 − 30 = 450 min.
- 450 min = 7.5 hours (7:30).
How to use the hours calculator

- 2Add any unpaid break in minutes (leave 0 if none).
- 3Read the worked hours — in decimal and in hours:minutes.
Overnight shifts and breaks
An end time before the start automatically rolls into the next day, so 22:00 → 06:00 is 8 hours. The break is always subtracted from the shift; if it is longer than the shift, the result is clamped to zero.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate hours between two times?
Enter the start and end time, then subtract any unpaid break. The tool shows the result both as decimal hours (7.5) and as hours and minutes (7:30).
How does it handle an overnight shift?
If the end time is earlier than the start time it is read as the next day. So 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours, no second date needed.
What's the difference between decimal hours and hours:minutes?
Decimal hours express minutes as a fraction of an hour — 30 minutes is 0.5, so 7:30 becomes 7.5. Payroll usually multiplies pay rate by decimal hours; a timesheet reads more naturally as 7:30.
