Show steps
- Sum of the 6 values = 108.
- Mean = sum ÷ count = 108 ÷ 6 = 18.
- Median (middle value once sorted) = 15.5.
- No mode — every value is equally frequent.
How to use the average calculator
- 1Type or paste your numbers, separated by spaces, commas or new lines.
- 2Read the mean at the top and the median, mode and range beneath it.
Mean vs. median
One huge value drags the mean up but barely moves the median. That’s why “average” income (mean) is usually higher than what most people earn (median) — when data is lopsided, the median is the fairer summary.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between mean, median and mode?
The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value once the numbers are sorted. The mode is the value that appears most often. On skewed data they can differ a lot.
When should I use the median instead of the mean?
When a few extreme values would distort the average — incomes or house prices, say. The median ignores how far out the outliers are, so it better reflects the 'typical' value.
What is the range?
The difference between the largest and smallest value (max − min). It's the simplest measure of how spread out the numbers are.
