Frequently asked questions

How do you add two fractions?

Put both over a common denominator, add the numerators, then reduce. For 1/2 + 1/3, the common denominator is 6: 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. This calculator does the common denominator and the reducing for you.

How is the result simplified?

The numerator and denominator are divided by their greatest common factor, so 4/8 becomes 1/2. The sign is kept on the numerator and the denominator stays positive.

Can I divide fractions?

Yes — dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal. a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × d/c. Choose ÷ and the calculator flips the second fraction automatically.
