Armenia applies EAEU import rules: duty on customs value by engine size and age band, then VAT 20% on value + duty, plus an environmental fee.

Electric vehicles are exempt from the environmental fee.

How Armenia vehicle import tax works

Updated 2026-07-01

Armenia applies EAEU import rules, which stack three charges: a customs duty on the car’s value, 20% VAT computed on value plusduty, and an environmental fee that grows with the car’s age. Unlike Georgia, none of the charges depend on a per-cm³ rate — engine size instead selects the duty percentage.

Customs duty — engine-size band plus age surcharge

The duty rate is a percentage of the declared customs value, built from two parts that are added together:

Duty rate component by engine size (rule set v1, illustrative)
Engine sizeRate (% of value)
Up to 1,000 cm³10%
1,001–2,000 cm³12%
2,001–3,000 cm³15%
Over 3,000 cm³20%
Age surcharge added to the size rate (rule set v1, illustrative)
Vehicle ageSurcharge
Up to 3 years+0%
4–7 years+2%
8+ years+5%

Electric vehicles skip the bands and pay a flat EAEU-style 15% duty rate instead.

VAT — 20% on value plus duty

VAT is not applied to the price alone: the 20% is charged on the customs value with the duty already added. This stacking makes VAT the largest line in most Armenian import estimates, and it is why a higher duty rate raises the VAT line too.

Environmental fee — rises with age

A fee of 2% of the value applies to cars up to 3 years old, 5% up to 10 years, and 10% beyond that. Electric vehicles are exempt — the line is dropped from their breakdown entirely.

Frequently asked questions

Is VAT charged when importing a car into Armenia?

Yes — 20% VAT applies, and it is calculated on the customs value plus the customs duty, not on the price alone. That stacking is why the VAT line is usually the largest item in the breakdown.

Are hybrids cheaper to import into Armenia?

Not under the duty structure modelled here — hybrids pay the same engine-size and age-based duty as petrol or diesel cars. Electric vehicles are treated differently: a flat duty rate applies instead of the size and age bands, and the environmental fee is waived.

How is the customs duty rate determined?

Two parts are added together: an engine-size band (larger engines pay a higher percentage of the customs value) and an age surcharge (cars older than three years pay extra, older than seven years more still). The combined percentage is applied to the declared customs value.

What documents do I need for Armenian customs clearance?

Typically the purchase contract or invoice, the vehicle's title and export documents, and the transport papers. This calculator only estimates the charges — the exact requirements come from the State Revenue Committee, so verify the current procedure before importing.

How often do the rates change?

Duty rates follow EAEU tariff decisions and Armenian national legislation, either of which can change. This tool's rules are versioned data — this page runs rule set v1, verified 2026-07-01 — and the calculator shows its verification date under every result.
