How to use the force calculator

  1. 1Choose to solve for force, mass or acceleration.
  2. 2Enter the two known values in kg and m/s² (or N).
  3. 3Read the result and open Show steps for the rearranged formula.

Weight is just force

An object’s weight is the gravitational force on it: F = m × 9.81on Earth. A 10 kg mass weighs about 98.1 N— set acceleration to 9.81 m/s² and solve for force to check it.

Frequently asked questions

What is Newton's second law?

It states that the net force on an object equals its mass times its acceleration: F = m × a. A larger mass or a larger acceleration means a larger force.

What is a newton?

One newton (N) is the force that accelerates a 1-kilogram mass at 1 metre per second squared. So 1 N = 1 kg·m/s².

Does this include gravity?

Only if you set it up that way. To find weight, use acceleration a = 9.81 m/s² (Earth's gravity); the resulting force is the object's weight in newtons.
