Show steps
  1. Tip = bill × tip% = 60.00 × 18% = 10.80.
  2. Total = bill + tip = 60.00 + 10.80 = 70.80.
  3. Split 2 ways: 70.80 ÷ 2 = 35.40 each.

How to use the tip calculator

  1. 1Enter the bill amount.
  2. 2Set the tip percentage (18% is a common default for table service).
  3. 3Set how many people are splitting the bill.
  4. 4Read the total and what each person pays — no button to press.

Quick mental check

10% is the bill with the decimal point moved one place left; double it for 20%. Halfway between is 15%. So on a $60 bill: 10% = $6, 20% = $12, 15% = $9 — handy when you just want a round number.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is customary for table service — 18% is a common default. Counter service, delivery and other countries vary widely, so treat the percentage as a starting point you can adjust.

Do I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Etiquette guides say tip on the pre-tax subtotal. This calculator applies the percentage to whatever bill figure you enter, so type the subtotal if you want to exclude tax.

How is the split calculated?

The tip is added to the bill, then the total is divided evenly by the number of people. Each person's share and the tip portion of it are both shown.
